The Benicia Police Department closed a 5-year-old sexual assault cold case on Friday, according to a post on the department’s Facebook page.
In 2013, a 64-year-old Benicia woman was sexually assaulted on Halloween after an unknown assailant forced his way into her home. As a result of struggling with the victim, the suspect left samples of his blood which detectives collected, the department wrote.
Through DNA analysis, police were able to identify Alexander Haynes, 34, as a suspect in the sexual assault after he was arrested in University Place, Wash. for a burglary earlier in March, and his DNA was entered into the system. The DNA matched that of the blood that was left following the assault in Benicia, where Haynes was a resident at the time.
A $250,000 arrest warrant with extradition orders for Haynes was obtained by Benicia detectives, who flew to Washington on Wednesday. Haynes was taken into custody without incident and booked into the Pierce County Jail by Benicia detectives in collaboration with detectives and officers from the Pierce County Sheriff’s Department and University Place Police Department.
“We are very glad to be able to solve this case and let the victim know of the arrest. We are also thankful for all the assistance given to us by Placer County Sheriff’s Department and University Place Department,” the department wrote. “One of the Police Department’s pillars is relentless pursuit of justice, and the work our detectives did on this case exemplifies it. We are extremely proud of them.”

Good job by the BPD!!
and good job by the Herald to find this story. It seems that it warranted a bigger announcement than a FB posting by the BPD.
