Police: Residents help nab burglars

May 13, 2015 by Donna Beth Weilenman 3 Comments

Two men have been arrested and charged in connection with an attempted burglary of a Dorset Way home in which someone attempted to kick in the front door Tuesday afternoon, Lt. Mike Greene said Wednesday.

Greene said the incident began about 1:30 p.m. at a house in the 800 block of Dorset Way, when someone rang the doorbell and banged on the front door.

A couple inside the house didn’t respond initially, Greene said, but then heard someone try to kick in the front door.

“At this point, the resident answered the door and confronted the two male subjects, who fled the area on foot,” Greene said.

The wife called police while her husband chased the two men into the neighborhood until he lost sight of them, Greene said.

Officers began searching the area, and neighbors, calling the Benicia dispatch center, provided more information that led police to the two suspects’ wherabouts.

One man was found in a nearby Leeds Court driveway, and the other was hiding in the bed of a pickup truck parked on Oxford Way, according to Greene and Solano County Jail booking records.

Greene identified the two men as Deandrae Harris, 21, of Vallejo, and Curtis Cail, 22, of San Francisco.

Harris has been accused of two felonies, attempted residential burglary and criminal conspiracy. In addition, Benicia police learned he has a Solano County felony warrant accusing him of robbery and possession of stolen property and another from Antioch accusing him of burglary.

Bail for the Benicia charges was set at $60,000.

Cail has been accused of felony-level attempted residential burglary and criminal conspiracy as well as a misdemeanor charge of possession of burglary tools. His bail for the Benicia charges was set at $63,000.

Both men were booked into Solano County Jail, Fairfield.

“I really appreciate this alert community and the residents who are willing to call and report suspicious behavior,” Benicia police Chief Erik Upson said in a news release.

“I would specifically like to thank the witnesses in this case who assisted our officers in locating the suspects in this case.”

“This is a great example of the police department and community working together.”
