Police: Benicia man committed suicide during eviction

March 13, 2014 by Donna Beth Weilenman 3 Comments

A 59-year-old Benicia man who had just been told he would be evicted from his home apparently shot himself Thursday while three Solano County Sheriff’s deputies were at his front door, Benicia police Lt. Frank Hartig said.

The man had been at his home in the 1400 block of George Court when the deputies contacted him about 10:25 a.m. Thursday about the eviction, Hartig said.

He told the deputies he needed to tend to a pet and closed the door, Hartig said.

While they waited on the front porch, the deputies heard a noise they thought came from the garage, Hartig said.

When the man didn’t answer their calls, the deputies entered the home through the front door and found the man in the living room, suffering from a self-inflicted gunshot wound, Hartig said.

After both Benicia Police and Benicia Fire departments were contacted, the man was taken to Kaiser Medical Center in Vallejo, where he died of his injuries, Hartig said.

“Benicia police are continuing to investigate this incident,” Hartig said. “The identities of all involved parties will not be released at this time.”

This is such a sad story. So many people lose their homes to foreclosure due to job loss. I don’t know what this mans story is; but I suppose he had no where to go without income. His home was the only roof over his head for some time-since foreclosure takes a while. He probably stayed, hoping to get work and make the reduced payments his bank told him to make, though if he was getting unemployment benefits, they had probably run out. His savings and retirement accounts probably ran out while he was still “hopeful” of finding a job and saving his home. He may have even lost his wife because he was considered a “loser” since he couldn’t find a job. He probably could not re-qualify for those lower payments without a job. So now the bank won. They have made their money on the “homeowner/s” from the day it was built. They will continue to make money on the next “owner”….probably at a lower payment.. They won. We all lose.(except for the new owners) This is such a shame. The job losses in this nation due to globalization are breaking up homes and and causing the American dream to fall away for many people. This may not be his story-but I know people who have lived it.

I am going through the same thing except I rent. I have lost my job twice in a year. The second time I can’t get unemployment. Did not work long enough. Landlord is evicting me over 3,295.00. I make 83K a year but they refuse to wait till I get new job. I’m terrified about being forced out. No where to go. I live alone. I’m ready to buy gun to end my time on this planet. This world is so cold to the less fortunate. It’s almost a blessing to be relieved of life.
