Brush in hand, leaning over her just begun depot painting,
Samantha McNally is on Saturday duty
at the table by the entry
when I walk into the Benicia Plein Air Gallery.
Suddenly I remember that the depot sells See’s,
so I walk down First towards the water, admiring
Benicia’s sturdy palms on the west side of the street
and the slender scattering near the building.
I try to open the depot door, see its hours sign,
and realize I’ve arrived after closing time.
Back at the gallery without what I’d planned to bring,
I feel thwarted, then see Samantha’s painting
Becoming the scene I had just left
and resolve that at the reception August 12th
painters, poets, and guests
will celebrate Benicia’s aesthetic wealth
with See’s, because in Benicia it’s the best.

Today’s Benicia Plein Air Gallery reception (8/12/16) looked to me to be a great success. Combining painting, poetry, food, happy people (including Benicia’s wonderful mayor) and See’s made a memorable afternoon for me.
