Eyes snapped right,
As they marched in review.
Once many more,
Now very few.
A paunch on a belly,
Once hard and flat.
Once young and smooth,
For all to look at.
Now passed on the street,
Seen in the day.
Read in their eyes,
See what they say.
They speak of times,
Both near and far.
Trouble and joy,
They followed their star.
“Eyes right”, the call,
In the day’s high heat.
The step of the men,
Made the asphalt beat.
They remember it well,
Brought back now in age.
It was life, and love,
Not a history page.
“Eyes right”, the call.
They answered the sound.
“Eyes right”, the call.
Once a new life found.
Now only a memory,
Come from the past.
Other times, other places.
A long shadow cast.
