Poetry Corner: James Garrett “Anniversary”

April 6, 2018 by James M. Garrett Leave a Comment

As I sit here, we both know
That I will always love you.
I’ve shown it often,
Alone and in view.
Without you I would now be,
Dead or in the penitentiary.
You are my life and love,
And my beneficiary.
It hurts me, but I have no present.
I cannot think of one to give.
But I’ll be there for you,
As together we two live.
You gave us our son.
I’m so glad we kissed.
Without that moment,
All this we would have missed.
I know that you know.
I know that you are there.
That is what is important.
That is what we share.
I cannot live without you.
I’d be alive, but no more.
You’ve been my guide.
You’ve been my core.
I think I made a promise
To love, honor, and obey.
But words mean very little,
If there is no effort in what they say.
You have given me everything
I could ever hope for.
I hope I give at least as much.
You’ve given so much more.
