Benicia High’s top swimmers competed at the Northern California Swimming Championship Invitational last weekend in Roseville and came in ninth place out of 15 teams.
Benicia seniors Nathan Robertson, Evan Sousa and Cris Gomez and junior Matt “Moose” Simonson took third place in the boys 200 freestyle relay (1:31.56). Junior Xavier Quintana scored high points for Benicia, taking sixth place in the 100 butterfly (0:55.11) and 10th in the 200 freestyle (1:52.29), qualifying for sections in both events.
Gomez (ninth in 50 freestyle, ninth in 100 freestyle), Simonson (11th in 50 freestyle, 12th in 100 butterfly), senior David Larson (ninth in 200 freestyle), and juniors Harrison Flores (14th in 100 freestyle) and Derral Osborne (16th in 50 freestyle) also placed individually. Juniors Gavin Griffin and Hank Nelson each earned points on two relays.
Sophomore Esther Hurst took high point honors for the Lady Panthers with an eighth-place finish in the 100 backstroke (1:06.21). Sophomore Kelsi Norman qualified for sections taking 14th in the 100 freestyle (0:58.62). Senior Nicole Peck, junior Amelia Arechy and sophomore Molly Casper all earned points on multiple relays.
The Panthers resume their Solano County Athletic Conference campaign Wednesday at Fairfield.
