
NICOLE PECK won the girls varsity 200 freestyle and 100 butterfly against Vallejo at the James Lemos Swim Center.
Benicia High’s varsity swimming teams opened the Solano County Athletic Conference season with dominating performances Wednesday against Vallejo at the James Lemos Swim Center.
The Benicia boys raced to a 109-19 victory and the Lady Panthers cruised to a 92-18 win. Two Lady Panthers each won two individual events. Senior Nicole Peck won both the 200 freestyle and 100 butterfly while freshman Samantha Man took the 200 IM and 100 backstroke.
The girls relay team of Man, Hannah Barlow, Camila Sanchez and Esther Hurst qualified for sections in the 200 freestyle with a time of 1:50.74. The junior varsity Lady Panthers also qualified for sections in the 200 free relay with Katya Wills, Lauren Matthews, Alexa Jacobson and Molly Casper going 1:56.56.
Individual winners for Benicia’s boys included seniors Cris Gomez (200 free), Micah Baird (50 free), Evan Sousa (50 free), Nathan Robertson (100 free) and Mitchell Zia (100 back); juniors Matt “Moose” Simonson (200 IM) and Hannah Barlow (100 free); and sophomores Esther Hurst (500 free) and Sean Fraser (500 free).
“It’s always great to open up the season with a win at home,” said Benicia head coach Jeff Kuta. “We tried out some of our Lady Panther underclassmen on the varsity squad and they did exceptionally well. They’re great competitors and racers.”
The Panthers take on the Rodriguez Mustangs on Friday at the James Lemos Swim Center.
