THE BENICIA OUTLAWS 8-under softball team opened its summer season by winning a tournament championship in San Jose last weekend. The Benicia Outlaws 8-under softball team opened their 2015 summer season by winning a tournament championship in San Jose last weekend.
The Outlaws opened the tournament with a 2-0 victory over the Redwood City Wicked. Alexandria Yra and Emma French combined to pitch a perfect game with nine strikeouts. A RBI single by Olivia Kundysek scored Nora Welsh in the third inning and Benicia added an insurance run in the top of the fourth with a leadoff double by Smith and a RBI single by Rylee Jarmin.
Benicia beat the Hollister Heat in the second game of pool play, 6-1. Yra, French, Alyson Walling and Ava Horner combined for nine strikeouts while allowing only four hits. Yra hit a two-run homer and Ava Marks had a three-run double.
The Outlaws clobbered the Belmont Explosion, 10-1, in Game 3. Yra, French and Walling allowed one run on two hits while striking out eight. Kundysek, Yra, Marks, Walling and Cierra Ray each tallied two hits in Benicia’s 16-hit attack.
Benicia went into Sunday’s elimination day as the No. 1 seed out of 12 teams and had a first-round bye. The Outlaws went on to beat the Los Gatos Magic, 5-0, behind Walling and Yra, who each pitched two innings and combined for 11 strikeouts. Yra had two RBIs while Kundysek, Vanessa Smith and Ava Rojas each had a RBI.
Benicia scored four times in the first inning against the San Mateo Slammers in the semifinals en route to a 4-1 victory. A home run by Marks, a triple by Yra and a double by Kundysek did the damage.
Benicia won the championship with a 4-0 win over the previously undefeated San Jose Twisters. Yra, French and Horner combined for the shutout and Smith had a key two-run double.
