Outlaws 14-under ‘A’ win USSSA State softball title

THE BENICIA OUTLAWS 14-under ‘A’ softball team won the USSSA Fastpitch Softball State Championship Tournament in Roseville.

The Benicia Outlaws 14-under ‘A’ traveling softball team won the USSSA Fastpitch State Championship Tournament in Roseville earlier this month after going a perfect 6-0.

The Outlaws wrapped up the title with back-to-back victories over the California Destroyers (Visalia). Kate Gillum was the winning pitcher in a 6-3 victory that sent the Outlaws to the championship round. Brooke Cramer went 2-for-3 with a run and two RBIs while Amanda Ajari had a hit and two runs. Bailey Valdez went 1-for-3 with a run and a RBI, and teammates Jennifer McCue and Jennifer Giron each had a hit and a run.

In the championship game, Ajari pitched a five-hitter as Benicia cruised to a 10-2 victory over the Destroyers. Ajari helped her own cause at the plate by going 3-for-3 with two runs and five RBIs. McCue had two hits and three runs while Katherine Montuya went 2-for-3 with two runs. Emily Rahill went 2-for-3 with a run.

Benicia opened the tournament with a convincing 12-2 victory over the California Yard Sharks. Ajari pitched a four-hitter and Gillum went 2-for-4 with a double, a run and a RBI. Montuya went 2-for-2 with a run and a RBI, Giron went 2-for-3 with two runs, and Maci Wolf had two hits and two runs.

The Outlaws followed up that win with a 6-3 victory over the Auburn Storm. Gillum was the winning pitcher and Cramer went 2-for-3 with a triple, a run and two RBIs. Ajari scored a run, Rahill had a double, a run and a RBI and Valdez went 2-for-3 with a run.

Gillum pitched a one-hit shutout as the Outlaws blanked the Lafayette Crossfire, 8-0. Valdez went 2-for-3 with two runs and two RBIs, McCue went 3-for-3 with two runs, and Wolf went 2-for-2 with two runs. Chloe Zimmer added a hit and a run.

Benicia wrapped up pool play with a 9-3 victory over the Folsom Freedom. Ajari tossed a five-hitter and Montuya went 3-for-3 with two runs and two RBIs. Giron went 2-for-2 with two runs, and Cramer and Ajari each had one hit, one run and one RBI.

The Outlaws made only six errors in six games and outscored their opponents 51-13. Ajari and Gillum combined for a 1.80 earned-run average, walked only eight batters and didn’t hit a batter.

Benicia’s 14-under ‘A’ squad will take part in a tournament in South Lake Tahoe beginning July 31.
