The Benicia Outlaws 12-under traveling softball team won all five games at a tournament in Napa last weekend and captured its second tourney championship in two tries.
The 12U Outlaws, now 9-1 overall this season, out-slugged the Pleasant Hill Panthers in Sunday’s championship game, winning 20-13 in seven innings. The Outlaws trailed 8-4 after four innings but scored three runs in the fifth, five runs in the sixth and eight runs in the seventh inning to pull away.
The Outlaws had 24 hits in the game, led by Amanda Ajari, who went 5-for-6 with two triples, two doubles and three RBI. Kate Gillum was 4-for-5 with three runs and three RBI, Jordan Coombs went 4-for-6 with four runs and two RBI, Loida Peterson went 3-for-5 with three runs and an RBI, and Kylie Cerna went 2-for-4 with two runs and an RBI.
Gillum pitched and got the victory and picked up four wins during the tournament.
Benicia opened the tournament Saturday with a 15-0 victory over Petaluma Steal Breeze. Gillum and Bailey Valdez combined on the shutout while Ajari went 3-for-3 with three runs. Lily Towarnick went 2-for-2 with two runs and three RBI, Haley Wibben scored twice, and Jordan Coombs went 2-for-2 with two runs and an RBI.
The Outlaws moved on to blank the Pleasant Hill Panthers in Game 2, 10-0. Ajari threw a complete-game shutout and Emily Rahill went 3-for-3 with three runs and two RBI. Cerna had a hit, a run and an RBI, and Maci Wolfe had a hit and a run.
Benicia’s toughest game was a 5-2 victory over the Belmont Blast in Saturday’s finale. Benicia scored three runs in the first inning, saw Belmont close to within 3-2, then put the game away with two runs in the fifth inning thanks to a solo homer by Rahill and an RBI hit by Gillum, who threw a complete game.
Sunday’s semifinal saw Benicia beat the Belmont Blast thanks to a fourth inning that had the Outlaws bat around twice and score 13 runs. The first 11 batters of the inning scored as Benicia erased a 5-3 deficit. Rahill went 4-for-4 with three runs, three RBI, a homer and two doubles. Wolfe went 2-for-2 with three runs and two RBI, and Marlee Tuttle hit a home run and scored twice.
Benicia will host the annual Del Holson Tournament on June 21-22.
