The Benicia Outlaws 12-under ‘B’ fastpitch softball team nearly won its third straight tournament championship but lost in the title game of its own Del Holson Tournament in Benicia last weekend.
Benicia won three “pool” games on Saturday at Mary Farmar Elementary and the first two games Sunday at Community Park before the Foster City Flash beat the Outlaws, 7-5, in a seven-inning championship game. It was only the second loss in 16 games for Benicia’s 12-under ‘B’ squad in three tournaments this season.
Foster City took a six-run lead after three innings and the Outlaws never recovered. Emily Rahill, who had an outstanding tournament for the Outlaws, went 4-for-4 in the title game with a home run and three RBI. Amanda Ajari went 2-for-4 with a double and a run, and Loida Peterson went 2-for-4 with a run.
Benicia opened pool play with a 5-0 victory over the Alameda Blaze. Ajari pitched a two-hit shutout while Rahill went 2-for-2 with a run and an RBI. Peterson and Kate Gillum each added a hit, run and RBI.
The Outlaws moved on to beat San Jose Quicksilver, 8-4. Gillum pitched a two-hitter and Rahill went 2-for-2 with a double and two runs. Ajari and Bailey Valdez each had a hit, a run and an RBI, and Lily Towarnick added a hit and a run.
Benicia wrapped up Saturday’s competition with a 8-2 win over the Oakland Vipers. Ajari pitched a four-hitter and Gillum went 2-for-2 with a double, a run and two RBI. Maci Wolf went 2-for-2 with a run and an RBI, Haley Wibben had a double and an RBI, and Peterson went 1-for-1 with two runs.
Gillum pitched a one-hitter as Benicia beat the Albany/Berkeley Sting-Hornets, 5-2, in Sunday’s quarterfinals. Valdez went 2-for-2 with an RBI, Rahill had a double and a run, and Ajari went 1-for-2 with two runs and an RBI.
The Outlaws trailed Spirit of Morgan Hill early in Sunday’s semifinal but rallied for a 7-3 victory. Ajari pitched another four-hitter and went 3-for-3 with two runs and two RBI. Rahill went 1-for-2 with two runs, Peterson scored two runs, and Jordan Coombs scored a run.
The 12-under Outlaws play at a double-elimination ASA Nationals Qualifier beginning Friday at the Twin Creeks Softball Complex in Sunnyvale.
