Olmes, Johnson lead Bruins past Redhawks

September 5, 2015 by Steve Guertin Leave a Comment

Anthony Olmes and Marquel Johnson made several connections Friday night at Dante Magnani Field and sparked the St. Patrick-St. Vincent High varsity football team to a 34-21 victory over the Vallejo Redhawks.

It was the first win of the year for the Bruins (1-1), who avenged a 14-13 loss at Vallejo last season. The Redhawks fell to 0-2.

Olmes threw a pair of touchdowns to Johnson in the second quarter – one a 90-yard catch and run that put the Bruins up 14-6 and another that went for 26 yards and a 20-14 lead at the break. Olmes broke things open with a 7-yard TD run to open the second half, and Alex Garcia capped off the scoring with an 18-yard touchdown run with 7:27 remaining.

Olmes was deadly, completing 10-of-12 passes for 222 yards and two TDs. Johnson was on the receiving end of most of it, catching six passes for 167 yards and two TDs.

SPSV opened the scoring midway through the first quarter using a different connection. Starting quarterback Michael Pappas found Marshel Martin for a 23-yard touchdown pass, then hit the sophomore again for a 2-point conversion and an 8-0 lead.

The momentum didn’t last as Vallejo’s Charles Harrell scooped up SPSV’s fumbled punt return and rambled to the Bruins 9-yard line, leading to 4-yard TD run by quarterback Tyler James. The Vallejo senior threw for 128 yards on the night with another 29 yards rushing and also recorded a safety.

Pappas threw for 76 yards and Alex Olmes had 53 yards receiving.

The Bruins are at home again this coming Friday against Burton. The Pumas (0-1) lost their season opener Friday to Castlemont, 45-26. Castlemont beat the Bruins 47-28 in Oakland in SPSV’s season opener.
