Oldtimers sweep a pair from Modesto behind Silva, Fade

May 1, 2014 by Steve Guertin Leave a Comment

The Benicia Oldtimers baseball team swept a doubleheader from host Modesto last Sunday, winning 9-5 and 6-0 behind complete games from pitchers Rick Silva and Brandon Fade.

Silva allowed only three earned runs in Game 1 and scattered six hits in seven innings. Marco Santos, Roger Santos and Ernest Holquin each had two hits for Benicia. Mark Mortensen crushed a booming double to right for three RBI.

Fade threw a complete-game shutout in Game 2, allowing eight hits while striking out six.

Modesto threatened in the first inning by loading the bases with no outs, but Fade struck out the next two hitters and got a ground ball to get out of the inning unscathed. Modesto threatened again in the final inning with a single and a double, but Silva made a leaping catch at third base of a line drive headed for extra bases to end the game.

Benicia jumped out to an early lead by scoring three runs in the first inning. The Oldtimers added three more runs in the fourth on a sacrifice fly from Hancock and a single by Silva.

Benicia (6-2) hosts San Jose this Sunday morning at Fitzgerald Field.
