The Benicia Oldtimers baseball team took a pounding from visiting Lodi last Sunday and lost 14-3 at Fitzgerald Field.
It was the worst loss of the season for the Oldtimers, who dropped to 1-4 overall after winning last year’s Northern California championship.
“It’s early and it showed,” said Oldtimers manager Rick Killough. “We couldn’t pitch, we couldn’t catch and we couldn’t hit – just a few of the basic fundamentals of the game of baseball.”
Lodi – which lost to Benicia in last year’s Northern California semifinals after winning the championship in 2012 and 2013 – jumped out to a 6-0 lead in the first inning off four singles, a bases-loaded double and three Benicia errors. The Oldtimers ended up committing five errors on the day.
Lodi added four more runs in the fourth inning on four hits, then made it 14-0 with four runs in the sixth on two doubles, a single and a two-run homer.
Benicia avoided the shutout by striking for three runs in the ninth inning on hits from Eric Wheat, Rich Reza, Jessie Segle and Larry Sibilla.
Benicia pitcher Ricky Silva started and went four innings, allowing 10 runs on 12 hits with two strikeouts. Brandon Fade went five innings and allowed four runs on eight hits with four strikeouts.
Reza had three hits in the game while Lou Kosta and Randy Dismuke each had two hits.
The Oldtimers are off this weekend and return to the field April 26 for a doubleheader at Modesto.
