
IMANI MCNORTON won the discus title and finished third in the shot put at the SCAC Championships at Corbus Field.
Benicia High’s track and field teams had an OK showing in the Solano County Athletic Conference Championships at Corbus Field.
Benicia’s varsity boys and girls each finished in fourth place. Vanden ran away with the boys title with 207 points, followed by American Canyon (96), Vallejo (85) and the Panthers (50). The Vikings made it a varsity sweep when their girls won with 146 points, followed by American Canyon (111), Vallejo (101) and the Lady Panthers (68).
Benicia, however, did have several athletes qualify for the Sac-Joaquin Section Division II-III Trials, which begin Wednesday at Bella Vista High in Fair Oaks. The top four finishers in each SCAC Championship event advanced to Sections. Luis Ramirez won the varsity boys 1600 meters (4:39.18), took second in the 3200 meters (10:52.92) and finished fourth in the 800 (2:09.25). John Kuta was fourth in the 1600 behind Ramirez (4:59.32). Imani McNorton won the discus with a throw of 127 feet, 11 inches, and also took third place in the shot put with a throw of 40-11.
Allie Yip was a star for the Lady Panthers, winning the 1600 meters (5:44.85) and the 3200 (12:32.56). Yip also finished fifth in the 800, three seconds behind Section qualifying time. Partika Enid finished second behind Yip in the 1600 (5:48.07) and took fourth in the 800 (2:40.55). Lauren Thomas finished second in the discus (95 feet, 8 inches) and second in the pole vault (6-2). Karyna Mitchell was fourth in the 100 hurdles (19.07) and fourth in the 300 hurdles (57.46). Lana Gore just missed qualifying in the shot put (fifth place).
The Panthers also had several successful athletes at the Frosh/Soph level. Elijah Hahn-Smith took first place in the 1600 (5:07) and the 3200 (11:21.61) for Benicia’s boys. James Hanzel took first place in the 800 meters (2:15.81) and teamed up with Phoenix McGee, Isiah Tobias and Jalen Lane to win the 4×400 relay (3:56). McGee was second in the long jump (18-01.5), Brenden Chavez finished third in the 200 meters (25.50) and fourth in the 110-meter hurdles (19.92), Matthew Valle took third in the 400 (55.29), and Gabriel Crisostomo was fourth in the 800 (2:25.87).
Rouguiata Diallo took first place in the 100 meters (13.67) and the 200 (28.54) for the Lady Panther Frosh/Soph. Amaya Black finished second in the 100 meters (14.45) and teamed up with Diallo, Savanah Gomez and Asha Woodmasee to win the 4×100 relay (1:00.25).
Benicia’s Frosh/Soph boys finished second as a team with 89 points, well behind champiuon Vanden (152), which dominated the day. Vanden’s Frosh/Soph girls squeaked past Bethel, 64-60, to complete the Viking sweep. The Lady Panthers finished third (53).
