Get ready to get scared for a good cause, as NightMARE Island, the annual Halloween-themed fundraiser at the Mare Island Shoreline Heritage Preserve, continues through Monday, Oct. 31.
This year’s haunted house, created by Kay’s House of Horrors, is located at Building A-168, a 5,000-sq. ft. former bomb storage unit. Zombies will be on hand to help guide the lost.
Every night at 6:30, host “The Undertaker” leads guests on a tour of the Navy’s oldest cemetery in the west, with graves dating back to the 1860s. Visitors may also hike a lighted trail to the highest point on Mare Island, where they can visit the Spirit Ship and take in the twinkling, seven-county view.
Every night at 7:30, Soulseekers Paranormal Research conducts a paranormal meeting and investigation at the Visitors Center.
On Saturday, Oct. 29, see the 1st NorCal HearseCon. One special entry on display will be Vintage Carriage Company’s 1890s glass-enclosed hearse! Spooky music will be provided by the Grinning Ghosts. (See their video on Facebook at facebook.com/ GrinningGhostsHalloweenBand.)
On Sunday, Oct. 30, Native Bird Connections presents “Owls, the Raptors Among Us” at 6 p.m. in the Visitors Center.
NightMARE Island is open through Oct. 31 from 5 to 9 p.m. Guests fifteen years and older are admitted on a sliding scale, $2 to $10 pay-what-you-can; children under 15 are free. Costumes are encouraged. Flashlights and sturdy walking shoes are advised. Advance tickets may be purchased for $10 online at mareislandvallejo.com. Online reservations include a timed ticket, which allows visitors to avoid waiting in long lines.
NightMARE Island is located on Mare Island, Vallejo at 167 O’Hara Ct. at Railroad Ave.
NOTE: GPS is ineffective on Mare Island. For directions, visit the website at nightmareislandvallejo.com.
