BENICIA HIGH’S boys golf team had its best showing in years at the Sac-Joaquin Masters Tournament. The Panthers are (from left) Nick Flores, Zack McClure, Riley McCracken, Evan Cuenco, Connor Hatfield and Dustin Sparks.

Benicia High’s boys golf team shot a 408 at the Sac-Joaquin Section Masters Tournament in Stockton on Monday and finished 10th out of 14 teams – the program’s best Masters finish in recent memory.

The Panthers, making only their second Masters appearance since 2008, finished well behind 2015 champion Granite Bay (368) but had three golfers break 80. Zach McClure birdied the 18th hole and finished with a 76 to lead the Panthers. Evan Cuenco was right behind with a 77 and Connor Hatfield fired a 78. Nick Flores added an 84 and Dustin Sparks rounded out Benicia’s scorecard with a 93.

A Lodi golfer won the individual championship with a 68. Jesuit (375) and Central Catholic (379) joined Granite Bay in advancing to the Northern California Tournament. Benicia had its golf season come to an end.

“I think our Section is the strongest I’ve ever seen and the course was playing a lot harder than last year,” said Benicia golf coach Mike Prolo. “But it was a real successful year and we’ll have most everybody back for next year.”
