Benicia High star athlete Michelle Li had an MRI done on her injured right knee Sunday and the result wasn’t good.
According to her doctor, Li suffered a near or complete tear of the anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) and may need surgery, which would end her high school athletic career. The senior also suffered a severe medial collateral ligament (MCL) strain and likely partial tear.
Li will have a follow-up appointment at an orthopedic clinic later this week to further evaluate the injury.
Li was leading Benicia High’s girls varsity basketball team in virtually every statistical category when she suffered the knee injury two minutes into last Tuesday’s game at Vanden. The senior was also looking forward to playing varsity soccer for a fourth straight year after leading the Lady Panthers in scoring in 2014. The senior signed a letter of intent last Thursday to play soccer for Dominican University of California after graduation.
“She has been taking Advil only two times a day and not complaining too much about pain, so I thought her knee would be OK,” said her mother, Mika. “But her knee is pretty messed up.”
