Benicia High’s girls varsity soccer team made its 2015 debut at the Woodland Tournament last weekend and went 2-2 overall.
The Lady Panthers opened the tournament Friday with a 2-1 loss to Placer. Sara Hingley scored Benicia’s only goal in the second half. Benicia was supposed to play Modesto later in the evening, but Modesto didn’t show up and handed Benicia a forfeit victory.
Benicia got its first on-the-field win of the season when it edged Terra Linda, 1-0, on Saturday. Katie Lovelace’s direct kick deflected off the Terra Linda goalkeeper to Alyssa Lisenko, who blasted in the game’s only goal. The Lady Panthers concluded the tournament with a 3-0 loss to Roseville.
“It was a bag of mixed emotions,” said Benicia head coach Javier Martinez. “We had a slow start in our first game but then we started playing better until the last game when we laid an egg. We’re still learning what some of the newer players can do.”
The Lady Panthers (2-2) don’t play again until March 9 at Rodriguez. Benicia’s home opener isn’t until March 26 against Fairfield.
