Benicia High’s track and field team had one athlete qualify for Masters during last week’s Sac-Joaquin Section Division II-III Championships at Bella Vista High School in Fair Oaks.

Imani Dickerson barely advanced in the boys discus with a throw of 124 feet, 2.5 inches. The junior finished seventh in the SJS Championships and was the last of 24 qualifiers for the Masters, which begin this Thursday at Elk Grove High School. Dickerson’s throw was more than 10 feet short of the next-to-last Masters qualifier. Dickerson also finished 14th in the shot put (41-01.5) but didn’t advance.

Senior Allie Yip fell just short of qualifying for Masters in the girls 1600 meters, finishing eighth with a time of 5:35.22, only 1.51 seconds off the last qualifying mark. Yip also finished 12th in the 3200 meters (12:19.27). Teammate Enid Partika was 11th in the 1600 meters (5:41.78). Both Yip and Partika failed to reach the Finals in the 800 meters.

Other Benicia athletes to reach the SJS Championship Finals were Lauren Thomas, John Kuta and sophomore Luis Ramirez. Thomas finished 14th in the girls discus (86-09) while Kuta took 16th in the boys 1600 meters (4:47.15). Ramirez finished 11th in the boys 1600 meters (4:43.80) and 16th in 3200 meters (10:32.92) but didn’t get out of preliminaries in the 800.

Other SJS Championship qualifiers who didn’t get past the first-day preliminary round included Thomas in the pole vault (no height), freshman Britiana Fields in the girls 100 meters (18th, 13.50), sophomore Karyna Mitchell in the girls 100 meter hurdles (22nd, 21.11) and 300 meter hurdles (23rd, 59.19), and sophomore Matthew Larks in the boys 400 meters (no time). The all-freshman 4×400 girls relay team of Fields, Jordan Lane, Pilar Willis and Milyan White finished 21st in prelims (4:44.55) while the boys 4×400 relay team of Ramirez, Larks, Chris Burke and John Ford had no time.
