Benicia Little League’s 11/12 Majors all-star team avoided elimination from the District 53 Tournament with an 8-4 victory over Sonoma on Monday at Community Park.

Benicia (3-1) trailed 2-1 in the fourth inning but broke the game open with six runs. Gabriel Martinez went 3-for-4 with a home run and four RBIs while teammate Dylan Trammell had a pair of runs and RBIs. Trammell also pitched 4 2/3 strong innings to get the win.

After opening the tournament with a 13-3 win over St. Helena last Friday, Benicia sustained its momentum for a 13-3 victory over Vallejo National on Saturday. Benicia scored 12 runs in the first two innings and won in four innings. Nui Fifita had three RBIs, Trey Trias and Devin Mason each had two RBIs, and Martinez and Dylan Trammell each scored twice. Mason pitched three hitless innings and struck out seven.

Benicia’s first defeat of the tournament came on Sunday when Napa American held on for a 6-4 victory. Napa scored five times in the third inning for a 5-0 lead but Benicia battled back with two runs in the fifth and two more in the sixth before falling short. Mason went 2-for-3 with a RBI and Ben Saitz went 1-for-2 with a run and two RBIs.
