CIARAN O’CONNELL was one of four Benicia pitchers who combined on a one-hit shutout against Vallejo American.
The motto for Benicia Little League’s Majors all-star team is “One day, one practice, one game at a time.” Tuesday night at Community Park, Benicia was mowing down Vallejo American one at a time and launching home runs seemingly at will.
Jakob Boyle, Nui Fifita, Devin Mason and Trey Trias each hit homers while Mason, Boyle, Trias and Ciaran O’Connell combined on a one-hit shutout as Benicia kept alive in the District 53 Tournament with an impressive 23-0 victory.
Boyle went yard in a five-run first inning while Fifita and Mason went deep in an 11-run second inning as Benicia built a commanding 16-0 lead. Trias blasted a three-run homer in the third as Benicia sent 33 batters to the plate in only three innings.
“We’re just a deep team with a ton of really good baseball players,” said Benicia manager Derek Trammell. “They can hit, that’s for sure.”
Fifita finished with six RBIs and scored three times while teammates Ben Saitz and Dylan Trammell each scored four times. Gabriel Martinez went 3-for-3 with three runs and three RBIs, and Mason and Trias each had four RBIs.
Antonio Lawson’s single leading off the second inning accounted for Vallejo American’s only hit as Benicia combined to strike out 9-of-16 batters.
Benicia (4-1) needs two more victories to advance to this weekend’s championship round. They took on Tri-Valley on Wednesday, with the winner of that game facing either Napa American, Middletown or Fairfield Pacific on Friday at Community Park. Napa National beat Napa American on Tuesday, 6-5, and is the only undefeated team left in the bracket. “We’re just gonna keep taking things one game at a time,” Trammell said.
