Benicia Little League’s Majors all-stars rolled into the District 53 championship round after a 11-0 victory over Napa American in four innings on Friday at Community Park.
Pitchers Devin Mason and Jakob Boyle combined on a one-hitter -– the third straight one-hitter thrown by Benicia’s pitching staff in the tournament.
Benicia (6-1) has won four straight games by a combined score of 47-5 and takes on Napa National in the District 53 championship round on Sunday. Benicia would need to defeat unbeaten Napa National to force a decisive title game Monday. Napa National is the defending District 53 champion while Benicia is looking for its first District title since 2007.
Benicia jumped on Napa American with five runs in the top of the first inning. Ben Saitz and Dylan Trammell each walked to start the game and Mason hit a three-run homer to centerfield to set the tone. After Trey Trias reached safely on an error, three straight walks forced in another run to make it 4-0 and Boyle scored on a Jacob French ground ball to cap the early outburst.
A single by Trammell leading off the second inning and a double to right by Gabriel Martinez gave Benicia a 6-0 lead, and Benicia tacked on five more runs in the third to take total command. Martinez clubbed a three-run homer to center to make it 9-0, and after a single by Mason, Trias ripped a two-run homer to right to put Napa American away.
Mason and Boyle were lights out on the mound. Mason pitched the first two innings, struck out five and pitched his way out of a bases-loaded jam in the bottom of the first. After Dylan Snider was hit by a pitch and Justin Ray walked, Joe Horn grounded a two-out single up the middle for Napa American’s only hit of the day. Mason, however, struck out the next hitter to get out of the jam.
Boyle pitched two innings of hitless relief and retired six of the seven batters he faced, including three by strikeout.
Mason has pitched eight innings in the tournament and allowed only one hit and no runs with 18 strikeouts, picking up four of Benicia’s six wins along the way. Boyle has allowed three hits and two runs in eight innings, has struck out 14 and is 1-0 in the tournament.
Martinez went 2-for-4 with two runs and four RBIs and leads Benicia with a .600 batting average for the tournament. Trammell and Mason also had two hits each and are hitting .471 and .400, respectively.
