BENICIA’S SENIOR softball players celebrated their final home game with a 10-0 victory over American Canyon. The Lady Panthers seniors are (back row from left) Victoria Mackey, Brianna Schlattman, Lindsay Zimmer, Alana Combes; (front row) Olivia DeJesu, Mallory Barnard and Courtney Bowling.

Senior Victoria Mackey threw a five-inning no-hitter Tuesday as Benicia High’s varsity softball team beat visiting American Canyon, 10-0, on Senior Day to wrap up its third straight unbeaten Solano County Athletic Conference campaign.

The Lady Panthers (23-4, 15-0 SCAC) scored in every inning against American Canyon (14-12, 9-6 SCAC) while Mackey scattered two walks to record the shutout.

“That was a really good way to end our regular season,” said Benicia manager Kristin Grubbs. “She pitched really well and we played solid defense behind her.”

Sophomore McKenna Gregory hit a pair of home runs and drove in three. Mallory Barnard went 2-for-4 with a double and two runs, and fellow senior Brianna Schlattman went 3-for-3 with a run. Other standouts for Benicia included Courtney Bowling (two RBIs), Shelby Thompson (two runs) and Alana Combes (2-for-4, one run, one RBI.

The Lady Panthers have won 58 straight SCAC games dating back to 2012 and are expecting a top seed for the Sac-Joaquin Section Division II playoffs, which begin next Wednesday. Benicia is the defending Division II champion.

“You never expect to go undefeated,” Grubbs said. “It takes a lot of hard work and it’s a special honor, especially to have it happen three years in a row. The credit all needs to go to the girls. For them to be able to win that many games in a row is a real blessing.”

Vanden finished second in the SCAC and will join Benicia and third-place American Canyon in the postseason. The Lady Panthers are looking forward to defending their crown.

“We still have a lot of work to put in over the next few days,” Grubbs said. “Hopefully we’ll keep our work ethic going and be successful.”
