Former Benicia High softball player Victoria Mackey had a stellar freshman season for Southern Oregon University this year.
Mackey posted a 2.29 earned-run average – the lowest for a Raider freshman in the modern era of SOU softball – and a 16-3 record with 48 strikeouts and just 25 walks in 131 2/3 innings. She yielded more than three earned runs only three times in 17 starts.
For her efforts, Mackey was named to the NAIA All-West Region Second Team after helping Southern Oregon reach the NAIA playoffs for the first time in 10 years.
Mackey won her first seven decisions of the season for the Raiders, who went 37-18 overall this year. She was named All-Cascade Conference Pitcher of the Week three times (more than any other pitcher in the conference), including twice in a row in mid-February.
As a senior pitcher at Benicia High in 2015, Mackey posted a 2.37 ERA with 46 strikeouts in 62 innings and a .213 opponents’ batting average. She was a captain on a team that won the Sac-Joaquin Section championship before having the title stripped away due to an ineligible player.
Mackey’s younger sister, Olivia, was a starting center fielder and leadoff hitter for Benicia High’s varsity softball team this season. The younger Mackey went 5-for-8 with two runs and an RBI during a two-game Sac-Joaquin Section championship series with Ceres last Thursday.
Congratulations, Victoria! You work hard and put your heart into it – what an amazing accomplishment! You make all your loved ones so proud!
