Benicia’s Moyer family was quite proud when son Jackson and daughter Elle each won Northern California gymnastics championships late last month.
Jackson Moyer, a 13-year-old seventh grader attending Benicia Middle School, took first place in the All-Around at the 2015 NorCal Junior Olympics State Championships held at Oroville Gymnastics Academy. Jackson competed in the Level 6 division for gymnasts ages 12 and older and followed up on the Level 5 NorCal championship he won two years ago in San Luis Obispo.
Jackson’s younger sister, Elle, is following in his footsteps. The 11-year-old fifth grader attending Matthew Turner Elementary also took first place in the All-Around at the Northern California Rhythmic Gymnastics State Championships held in Rohnert Park. Elle competed at Level 4.
Both of the Moyers work on their gymnastics skills in Concord. Jackson trains at Liberty Gymnastics and is coached by Peter Jenkinson and Drayke Farley. Elle trains at CYC and is coached by Danielle Dudley and Anastasia Torba.
Kian Braulik, a seventh grader at Benicia Middle School, took third place in the boys All-Around and will join Jackson at the Regional Championships s in Ontario this weekend.
Gymnastics still remains mostly a club sport in Northern California. There is no competitive gymnastics in the Sac-Joaquin Section – of which Benicia High School is a part – or in the North Coast Section, which comprises a large swath of the NorCal turf. The Central Coast Section, however, does offer gymnastics.
