Michelle Li suffered a knee injury two minutes into Tuesday’s game against Vanden and Benicia High’s girls varsity basketball team struggled to an 86-36 loss.
Li, a senior who leads Benicia in most statistical categories, was taken to Kaiser Hospital in Vallejo after possibly suffering a torn ligament. Li is undergoing further evaluation and will miss Thursday night’s home game against Fairfield.
“It’s pretty bad,” said Li’s mother, Mika. “She can’t straighten her knee or put weight on her leg.”
The Lady Panthers (13-5, 3-3 Solano County Athletic Conference) were no match for Vanden (20-2, 6-0 SCAC) without their team leader. Vanden outscored Benicia 42-21 in the first half and went on a 30-7 run in the third quarter to turn the game into a blowout.
Calei Mendoza was a bright spot for Benicia, nailing four 3-pointers and finishing with a season-high 23 points. The rest of the Lady Panther roster combined for four field goals and 13 points.
