Letters: Too soon to vote on merger

April 18, 2017 by Editor Leave a Comment

Too soon to vote on merger

I am writing to express my support for the Service Employees International Union (SEIU 1021) and its representation of the Association of Bay Area Government (ABAG) employees.
As a member of the ABAG Regional Planning Committee, I am informed about a proposal to merge the Metropolitan Transportation Commission (MTC) with ABAG, which is in the midst of negotiations.
ABAG SEIU 1021 employees have not seen the specific salary and economic benefit package and as of now, the package does not include retiree medical benefit lifetime guarantee that ABAG employees currently receive. It is also unclear whether ABAG staff will be evaluated equitably and placed in a classification system that fairly acknowledges their years of service and performance. Further, at this time ABAG staff has not been allowed to have their labor representatives present when discussing the Organizational Study approved by the MTC Commission.
A successful merger between ABAG and MTC should include terms and conditions that includes fairness and equity for ABAG employees, especially with regards to the above concerns. Since the above concerns have not been addressed, it is premature to vote on this merger.

Monica Brown;
Solano County Board of Supervisors, District 2
