The retail cannabis issue
Just where is retail storefront cannabis sales headed for? Is it going to be medical only, medical and recreation, all products for both recreational and medical? There are many issues that must be resolved: site issues, distance issues, types of products, outdoor versus indoor growing, Industrial Park retail, Industrial Park distribution/manufacturing, medical or recreation only, medical or recreation separated, tax issues, location, size, design and many other issues. We also could see a ban on liquor in our parks without a permit and maybe even a ban on smoking in our parks. I believe the vapor-only issue may already have been solved with the e-cigarette issue. All will be debated and packed with pro cannabis folks at meetings, online, editorials and letters to just name some.
Yes, it does appear as I said in the past that the council is in favor of retail sales, but that could all change as more comes out on unintended consequences and attractive nuisances start to be talked about. The council could approve but with restrictions. The economic flood of tax money for the city budget is still questionable Some are saying that Vice Mayor Young is the leader on the local cannabis retail sales, but for how long? He may just see the issues and take a very restricted approach. The mayor does not like any smoke of any kind, so she is in a difficult position. This could end up not being as easy at it sounds.
Just who will be in favor of retail sales, and who will be against it? I think we already know who is in favor of retail sales. The big question will be who is against retail sales, outdoor growth etc. We need the opinions of school-aged children, teachers, MADD-type organizations, city employers, police, school board trustees, school PTAs, the Planning Commission (That is a good one. If a member is running for a council position, their silence will not be welcome), the Historical Society, planning department, Economic Development Board, present councilmembers, potential 2018 council candidates, local legal scholars and any other concerned groups and individual residents. They will come forward and could very well sway the final decision. Think crude by rail. This is not a slam dunk. Regardless of all the talk about the glamour and tourism, what will happen will happen. There could very well be some surprises.
Stay tuned, “The Owl” will be following this very important issue.
