Lack of preparation
I wanted to express my opinion regarding the article George Johnston wrote about the Benicia schools closing due to the smoke from the wildfires. I think he did a good job of reporting the situation, including the details of postponed events like Benicia High School Homecoming. My only real complaint was it wasn’t mentioned that the high school was not fully prepared for the situation. The phone lines were filled quickly, and teachers were not fully prepared to deal with dismissing students.
Beyond that, I think the article was insightful and helpful for those who did not fully understand the situation.

The opioid problem
Approxiamtely, 65,000 Americans died from opioid overdosing in 2016, up from 59,000 in 2015. Trends indicate the number will rise even higher in 2017. Joining the effort to combat this deadly trend, CVS Health recently instituted a policy to limit opioid dispensing, and has pledged funding for addiction programs, counseling and safe disposal of opioids. I look forward to the other two retail dispensers of opioids in our town to follow this example of leadership in the war on opioids.
