Letters: Jobs packages and Downtown Benicia Cleanup

May 23, 2018 by Editor Leave a Comment

Congress should pass more jobs bills

I want to know why there has been no big jobs package or big infrastructure bill out of our Congress in as long as I can remember. This isn’t just on Congressman Thompson, but he certainly has had the ability and the platform to write these bills and to try to get them passed. We need to be pushing more jobs in housing and environmental cleanup, instead of more refinery and cement factory jobs. With the automation of more and more jobs, and more and more jobs being combined so companies can “downsize” and save a buck, we’re going to need a federal jobs guarantee or else a guaranteed universal income. That is the future anyway. 100 percent automation means 100 percent unemployment. If people want to know more of my thoughts on this, they can email me at bluebasilisk@aol.com. Thank you.

Downtown Benicia Cleanup a success

We had our third annual Downtown Benicia Cleanup last Saturday with a great turnout. Fifty-two volunteers, including Benicia residents and various groups, showed up to Benicia Main Street at 9am ready to pickup trash on First Street. Groups that volunteered include Valero, American Heritage Girls, Benicia Lutheran Church, and Cub Scouts Pack 108. A big thank you to everyone that came out to make our Downtown even more beautiful for our community and visitors! A special thank you to Susan Hurl of Republic Services for providing a BBQ lunch for our volunteers.
