Letters: Confederate display and funding Benicia

August 27, 2017 by Editor 1 Comment

Funding Benicia

I read Thursday’s letter by Lionel Largaespada, and for the most part I am in agreement. The city simply needs to run itself like a business that wants to make a profit, or in our case, at least break even. Stop giving away the ranch to bring in or retain employees that can easily be replaced from a huge job market of qualified workers. I haven’t seen how much this new city manager is making but I am sure it is up close to that inflated figure they paid Brad Kilger. Did he milk Benicia or what? $2,000 a month may not seem like much, but multiply that by 12 months and 5 years. Now $120,000 is a lot of money, don’t you city politicians agree?
Let in new businesses other than antique shops and artists. All I hear is that competition might hurt our local businesses. Phooey! Bringing in new business will give people more choices versus the same ole same ole. Get it?
Also, please don’t take our tax money to cover your inability to spend within your means. I hear you are up to 50 percent now taken from the measure funds. I am afraid it won’t be long that we can’t afford to redo roads because the well will be dry–again. Speaking of which, why not repave areas that really need it instead of tiny little courts? The area between 780 and Military is terrible, and the holes keep getting bigger and bigger. Maybe the city has a deal with Big O? LOL.
This water thing has to be figured out because nobody can afford the bills other than maybe the rich types who are more likely to use the most water for their sweet lush lawns. Think, politicos of Benicia! Beware, your time is near and your political future hangs by a thread. I am sure there will be candidates coming out of the woodwork who actually care more about the city instead of their special-interest groups.
Peace and love to one and all.

Rob Pearson,
Benicia

Part of history

In response to the Wednesday letter regarding the Union Hotel stained-glass window, I certainly hope this treasure will be kept to remind us of our country’s past. Built in 1852, this hotel itself is history, hence the fitting name of Union Hotel. The Civil War is not a shining spot in our history, but by destroying a stained glass window with the Confederate flag artfully placed with the American flag does not erase it, nor does tearing down statues of historical figures. They still existed.
As with any young country we have had our growing pains and ugly moments, which we have and continue to learn from. Our country has also had many glorious and providential moments that we should remember, i.e. the Revolutionary War, Emancipation Proclamation and the Union victory. Don’t take the history of our past away. We need the reminders. So do our children and grandchildren.

Georgia Crowley,
Benicia

Rob you make some very good points. The new City Manager makes a base of about $232,000 with a 2.5% raise after less them 4/5 months. That brings the new City Manager to about $240,000. That is the contract. Brad had a base of $186,000 Plus the $24.000. So you see he was at $210,000. The city is now paying $30,000 per year more. I do not think the City Manager is over paid. You are correct on Measure C money at present we are at 50/50 soon to go to the full amount to keep the lights on. The one issue that I fully support is the water and sewer rate increases. Can you believe after eight years the mayor is now communicating with me via e-mail on these rates. Maybe she now understands that I do have the ears of the residents. Demonstrated very clearly on Benicia Ha
ppenings. I do believe it was about time. I do not believe we can go back in the past and blame any one council but the recent council with the exception of Hughes and Campbell and new member Young did want the in crease. I assume councilmember Young may be in that same boat with the mayor. I am not sure where councilmember Schwartzman stands. The water rates could have very easily been eased in just by reducing Capitol projects. We waited 50 years what’s a few more. Prioritize the projects. We must remember the mayor as been part of the council for 13 years and re-elected for another four. There is blame .I would say if leadership is your high quality where were you for the last 13 years? Glad to see you involved Rob.
