Letter: Why Thompson voted against the bill

April 20, 2018 by Editor Leave a Comment

Why Thompson voted against the bill

I looked up that bill that Green Party congressional candidate Jason Kishineff claimed our Congressman Mike Thompson should not have voted against.  It’s hard to believe that someone who claims to be paying attention to matters concerning the environment would be so out of touch with the work of his congressman.
Mike Thompson has always been committed to ocean protection issues. Without his strong advocacy, we would not have gotten the extensions of two marine sanctuaries off our Northern California coast.  Mike Thompson should be thanked for voting no to House Resolution 6899, along with other strong anti-drilling members of Congress, including Reps. Woolsey, Capps and Farr.  That bill would have allowed states to drill for oil in areas which were previously under congressional moratoria.  The bill manipulated Congress by offering money to those states agreeing to “opt in” to drilling for oil and gas development if their legislatures allowed it.
Kishineff should stop spreading false information.  Mike Thompson is consistently pro-ocean protection, and he knows how to read a bill.
