Letter: Save Our Social Security Fund

September 21, 2017 by Editor Leave a Comment

Save Our Social Security Fund

One Benicia resident trying to Save Our Social Security Fund. Here is her story.
I am trying to save our Social Security funds for all people in the United States that have paid FICA tax.
I made five calls to Reps. Mike Thompson and John Garamendi’s offices in Washington, D.C. to ask how to start this process. Nobody would call me back or give me any information, so I started getting signatures from family, friends and in my neighborhood. This was going very slowly, so I asked my grandson how I could get signatures on line and he sent me the website petitions.Whitehouse.gov. Here it told me how to write a petition.
At a town hall meeting in Benicia a few years ago, Congressman George Miller said “Our Social Security is fine as it is if they would leave it alone.” I believe this is true, and so do all the people I talk to. Congress has taken money from our
Social Security fund for years and never put it back. At a town hall meeting I asked Mike Thompson how they could get away with this and his answer was “There is nothing that says they can”t do it.”
I submitted my petition, Save Our Social Security Fund on Sept. 11 this year. The response was if I could get 100,000 signatures in 30 days, I would get a response from the White House. I started sending an email to family and friends with the link, petitions.whitehouse.gov and asked them to sign my petition. My grandson later said it would be easier if I submitted their name and email address. Then the White House sends them an email asking them for verification as well as if they want to share it with friends, giving then a chance to enter names with emails. However, they did not tell me the verification had to be done within 48 hours. So many people did not get counted and would have to resubmit.
My deadline is Oct. 11.
If every person that signs would give 10 or more names with emails, our total would increase fast._
If people want to read my petition it is there when you go in to sign or they can pull it up with petitions.whitehouse.gov.
I plan to be at the gazebo in the City Park 1 to 5 p.m. every day and 10 a.m. to noon Wednesday through Sunday.
Please support my effort and come.
Thank you very much.

Dorothy Story,
Benicia
