TAYLOR LEWIS had an ace and a couple of digs for Benicia in Tuesday’s season-opening sweep of visiting Pittsburg.
Benicia High’s varsity volleyball team officially opened its 2015 season Tuesday with a a 25-19, 25-17, 25-20 sweep of visiting Pittsburg.
The Lady Panthers were in control all match and rode a wave of steady serving, which accounted for 18 aces in the match.
“We’re serving tough,” said Benicia head coach Jamie Hadenfeldt. “We’re having very few errors and are able to go on service runs. It’s always nice to start out with the simple things.”
Junior Charlotte Cannizzaro led the offense with 11 kills and teammate Jessica Blakeman added six kills and seven aces. Karah Fisher dished out 17 assists.
Benicia (1-0) lost a Foundation Game to visiting Napa the night before but got off to early leads in all three sets against Pittsburg (0-2). The Lady Pirates, who have yet to win a set this season, had a couple of nice runs but never seriously challenged the Lady Panthers.
“There were some points where we’d break down and be a little inconsistent, but we worked our way through it,” Hadenfeldt said. “We always seemed to step up and regain our cushion.”
Ramona Glatzel had three aces and seven digs for the Lady Panthers, who don’t play again until Sept. 8 at home against Vacaville. Lexi Saitz had six assists, Emily Maher finished with four kills and Lana Gore chipped in three kills.
“It’s early in the season and we’re still trying to figure out what our best combinations are,” Hadenfeldt said. “We’ve got a few practices before we have to play again so that’s nice.”
