Benicia High’s girls golf team clinched its 14th league championship in the past 16 years with a forfeit victory over Bethel at Blue Rock Springs on Tuesday.
Benicia finished the regular season with a 12-0 record and clinched the league title no matter what happens at the Solano County Athletic Conference championships, which tee off next Tuesday at Vinter’s Golf Club in Yountville.
The Lady Panthers are already looking beyond next week’s SCAC Tournament to the Sac-Joaquin Section playoffs.
“We’ve still got work to do,” said Benicia golf coach Nan Prolo. “We have to prepare ourselves for Sections and hopefully the Masters. We’re doing well and we’re seeing improvement every week, but we need to keep playing good golf because the top Section teams are playing good golf as well.”
The Lady Panthers shot a 237 at Blue Rock, with freshman Sofia Young leading the charge with a 39. Teammate Jennifer Eleccion was right behind with a 43 and joins Young and senior Rachel Mahrt as contenders for the SCAC Most Valuable Golfer award.
“All three of them have kind of beat up on each other all season,” Prolo said. “The league tournament will decide who the individual MVP and all-league players will be.”
Nicole Ramirez fired a 48, Jazmine Norman added a 53 and Samantha Ross rounded out Benicia’s scorecard with a 55.
