Team co-captain Isabel Villalobos had 22 kills, two aces and 10 digs as the St. Patrick-St. Vincent High girls varsity volleyball team won its home opener Tuesday night, defeating Berkeley 25-21, 25-22, 23-25, 26-24.
The Lady Bruins (4-1) had a chance to win the match in three sets but had a hard time putting Berkeley (0-2) away late. After letting the third set slip away, SPSV took a 17-10 lead in the fourth set and led 20-16 before Berkeley rallied to tie it at 24-24. But a poor Berkeley serve turned the tide and a poor set by the Yellowjackets led to their doom.
“We did fine,” SPSV head coach Danette Domecus said of her young squad. “We could have won in three, but we let off the gas pedal.”
Halle Webster had 11 kills and three blocks for the Lady Bruins, who play at St. Helena on Friday. Teammate Nikki Lumauod had eight kills and 16 digs while Tiffany Diaz added five kills, five aces, three blocks and 10 digs.
Other standouts for the lady Bruins included Jaiden Paja (17 assists), Catherine Cortez (15 assists) and Candice Turk (three blocks).
