The St. Patrick-St. Vincent High varsity softball team played long ball Wednesday in Alameda, hitting six home runs to sweep a doubleheader from host St. Joe’s.
Two of those homers came in an 8-3 victory in Game 1. Taya de Alba led off a four-run second inning with a homer and added a RBI triple in the sixth. Neenah Pangilinan hit a solo home run in the sixth inning and went 3-for-5.
Natalya Ocon broke open a close game with a two-out, two-run single in the second inning. Jaydee Boursaw had a RBI triple in the fifth inning and Olivia Soley added a RBI double.
The Lady Bruins demonstrated even more power in a 14-6 victory in Game 2. Cydney Hampton absolutely crushed a two-run shot in the second inning and Pangilinan went yard again in the fifth inning.
“The ball was flying out of there,” said SPSV manager Rich Gigliotti. “I’ve never seen anything like it. It was a really long day but we came out of it OK.”
St. Joe’s actually took a 6-4 lead in the third inning thanks to a home run by Cassie Vonnegut, but de Alba ended up going 4-for-4 with a double and Soley added a key two-run triple in the fourth to help the Lady Bruins pull off the sweep.
The Lady Bruins improved to 14-4 overall and 5-0 in the Tri-County Athletic League. Every other team in the league has at least two TCAL losses.
SPSV doesn’t play again until April 15 against Acalanes.
