Junior stars looked poised for District title

July 8, 2015 by Steve Guertin Leave a Comment

Sean Mcquilken pitched a five-inning no-hitter as Benicia’s Junior League all-stars cruised past American Canyon, 11-0, in the first game of a best-of-3 District 53 series at Fitzgerald Field on Monday.

Mcquilken needed only 79 pitches to dispatch American Canyon and Benicia played solid defense all night. Benicia’s offense was just as good, collecting nine hits in the game.

“It was a great game for the team considering the short amount of practice time and that this was their first game together as a team,” said Benicia manager Carl Rendell. “However, they’ve melded well and have taken the fun they are having at practice to the game with them. Sean did not have his top-shelf stuff, but he was able to move the ball around a lot and keep the hitters from American Canyon guessing.”

Darin “Chuchi” Cooper went 3-for-4 with a run and two RBIs and teammate Luke Hornbrook had three RBIs. Dawson Hunt and Grant Lugliani each scored three times.

Benicia took on American Canyon again on Wednesday with a chance to wrap up the District 53 championship.
