Junior all-stars eliminated at Section Tournament

July 22, 2015 by Steve Guertin Leave a Comment

Benicia’s Junior all-stars made a brief appearance at the Section 1 Tournament in Dixon, losing two straight games for a quick elimination.

Benicia, which swept the District 53 Tournament series with American Canyon, opened the Section 1 Tournament with a 9-3 loss to North Oakland/South Oakland on Sunday. The game was tied 3-3 in the top of the fifth when N. Oakland/S. Oakland erupted for four runs. Oakland out-hit Benicia 8-4 and scored the game’s final six runs.

Sean Mcquilken, Justice Alexander and Dawson Hunt pitched well for Benicia, but several defensive errors opened the door for Oakland. Benicia didn’t have any extra-base hits and no player had more than one hit as the team dropped into the loser’s bracket, where they faced Fort Bragg on Monday. Luke Hornbrook had two RBIs.

Fort Bragg picked up where Oakland left off and won 9-4. Fort Bragg led 7-0 after three innings and took advantage of four Benicia errors.

Nathan Snitker had two hits while Hunt, Hornbrook, Darin Cooper, Braden Lavezzo, Nile Johnson and Max Rund each had one. Cooper also had two RBIs with Hornbrook and Johnson each plating one.

“It was a challenging Section Tournament for us as we did not have an answer for Fort Bragg or Oakland,” said Benicia manager Carl Rendell. “However, I love the players for their determination to play to the last out in this past game and our first. They tried with all they had to win, but came up a bit short.”
