LEARNING AND POSSESSING’S GOOD
But nothing quite compares
With taking things that once were yours
To pass them to your heirs
The union of two people
And the fruit it often bears
Makes us step outside ourselves
And orders our affairs
The act of rearing children
Is a clap of mighty thunder
A trial-and-error exercise
That’s often fraught with blunders
No matter how we warn our kids
Of pitfalls we endured
They have to learn them on their own
They act so self-assured
So teach them well and let them go
To do the things they do
Through their lives the world will keep
A little piece of you
