High school business continues ‘Odd Jobs’ through holidays

December 3, 2017 by George Johnston Leave a Comment

The kids are all right. Well, at least the ones in Benicia. Last year, a group of high schoolers started a business where they do odd jobs for the community.
We Do Odd Jobs was started by Benicia High School junior Chris Weldon and a group of his friends. This group was trying to figure out a way to pay for summer camp and came to the solution of creating a service where they would do odd jobs for the community like moving items and yard maintenance. Once they had the idea of what “We Do Odd Jobs” would do, they had to start advertising their new business, which they did on the Facebook group “Benicia Happenings.” From there, the We Do Odd Jobs started getting hired more frequently. Business continued to improve after the group received praise on the internet from their clients.
“We just want to give back to the people of our community.” Weldon said. “We do these services that weren’t being provided by anybody, and it was kind of clicked together and it was something Benicia was kind of missing.”
We Do Odd Jobs mainly employs high schoolers, but there are a few college students on staff. Weldon says people are attracted to work for We Do Odd Jobs because the hours are flexible.
“We have always liked it because of how flexible it is,” he said. “It works with our schedule. If we are busy one day and can not do something, we can move it to another day. We can give ourselves a little bit of freedom and not so many limits.”
The business runs year round. Winter time usually slows things down, but things are picking during the holiday season particularly with people needing their decorations hung, Weldon said. Other holiday related jobs the business offers include setting up Christmas lights and moving or picking up Christmas trees.
Weldon himself will be a part of We Do Odd Jobs for as long as he can. After that, he wants the business to be passed on to the future generation of Benicians and hopes We Do Odd Jobs has a long and fruitful legacy.
“I think people would want to be a part of We Do Odd Jobs because it’s right here in the community,” he said. “It’s flexible, and they can just go out. You meet new people, all sorts of people, and they tell you stories and things. You learn all sorts of neat things about Benicia while you’re actually doing this, it’s kind of cool.”_
