‘Healing’ walkers to traverse bridge

May 14, 2015 by Donna Beth Weilenman 4 Comments

A “Refinery Corridor Healing Walk” by those preferring renewable energy sources to fossil fuels will take place Sunday between Martinez and Benicia, two cities known for their refineries.

The groups Idle No More SF Bay and the Bay Area Refinery Corridor Coalition have joined in the walk, a procession beginning with Native-American staff in prayer accompanied by those in contemplation and conversation, organizers said.

Other participants include members of Benicians for a Safe and Healthy Community.

The walk will begin at Martinez Shoreline Park, on Ferry Street in Martinez, and conclude at Benicia’s Alvarez Ninth Street Park. It will begin at 8 a.m. with registration and an opening water ceremony.

Organizers have asked participants to bring their own lunches and snacks, since meals won’t be provided, sunscreen and a hat, any necessary medicines, a refillable water bottle, fully charged cell phones and cameras, comfortable shoes, an extra pair of socks and appropriate weather apparel.

They also may bring money for donations or to buy Healing Walk shirts from last year’s processions.

Organizers also are asking participants to refrain from bringing weapons, drugs or alcohol.

Those who want to participate but who are unable to complete the entire seven-mile walk may join at the Vista Point Bridge overlook at about 11 a.m., or at Benicia’s City Park at First Street and Military at about 1 p.m. They also may welcome walkers at Alvarez Ninth Street Park at about 4 p.m.

Those who want to determine where walkers are during the day may call 510-619-8279 for English or 510-269-7135 for English and Spanish updates.

Those who want to take BART to the walk may register by 8 p.m. Saturday by emailing RefineryHealingWalks@gmail.com to register for one of 17 seats on a shuttle that will pick up riders at 8:46 a.m. Sunday from the Martinez-North Concord BART Station.

Those who need transport back to Martinez or to the BART station will need to register for that service prior to the start of the walk Sunday.

Those interested may visit the websites refineryhealingwalks.com/walk2.html and SafeBenicia.org. Additional walks are scheduled June 20 from Benicia to Rodeo, and July 19 from Rodeo to Richmond.

The Refinery Corridor Healing Walk begins at the Martinez Shoreline Park at 8 a.m. Sunday.

“Organizers also are asking participants to refrain from bringing weapons,……”

I doubt there will be any CCW permit-holders taking part in this walk. Those types are usually diametrically opposed to renewable energy sources.
