Kameron Hatcher scored a career-high 32 points to lead Benicia High’s girls varsity basketball team past host St. Patrick-St. Vincent on Saturday, 62-46.
Hatcher hurt the Lady Bruins inside, outside and everywhere in between. If the sophomore wasn’t driving the basket and drawing fouls or making layups, she was knocking down shot from the perimeter. Hatcher made four 3-pointers, went 10-for-12 from the free throw line, pulled four rebounds and even had three steals.
“Kameron went off,” said Benicia head coach Randy Saitz. “She was the fastest player on the court and St. Pat’s couldn’t stop her. If I can get that kind of performance from her every night, we can make a nice playoff run.”
SPSV (6-17) had a 27-23 lead at halftime thanks to solid play from Selena Caoile and Taya de Alba and a couple of 3-pointers from Makayla Solano. But the Lady Panthers (13-4) came storming back with a 21-8 run in the third quarter as Hatcher and Michelle Li combined for 19 points. Benicia ended up outscoring the Lady Bruins 39-19 in the second half. The 39 points were the most Benicia has scored in any half this season.
“We got off to a slow start but we came back strong,” Saitz said.
Caoile led the Lady Bruins with 15 points. Li finished with 19 points, nine rebounds and five assists for the Lady Panthers, who battle first-place Vanden on Tuesday in Fairfield. The rest of the Benicia roster combined for 11 points.
“We’ll go in there and do the best we can,” Saitz said of tonight’s big game with the Lady Vikings (19-2, 5-0 Solano County Athletic Conference). “That’s all we can do.”
