Gehringer edges out Stingrays

The Benicia Stingrays swim team ended the regular season with a 357-340 loss to the host Gehringer Park Gators last Wednesday in Concord.

Alexa Jacobson and Mackenzie Mincy each won three individual events for Benicia’s girls, who won as a team, 209-153. Benicia’s boys lost 204-131 despite three individual victories each for Aden Li and Pierce Tenret.

Jacobson took first in the 100-yard freestyle (1:08.37), breaststroke (1:24.36) and IM (1:16.74) for the 15-18 girls. Teammate Tara Othman captured the 100-yard backstroke and teamed with Jacobson, Lauren Matthews and Kailee Henry to win the 200-yard medley relay.

Mincy dominated the girls 7-8 division, winning the 25-yard freestyle (18.90), backstroke (25.13) and 100-yard IM (1:53.28). Teammate Aislyn McNamara helped Benicia’s 7-8 squad complete the sweep, winning the 25-yard butterfly (23.90) and breaststroke (28.28) and joining Mincy, Kayla Zilka and Campbell Cerruti to win the 100-yard freestyle relay (1:28.15) and medley relay (1:41.40).

Other standouts for the Lady Stingrays included Ellen Goncharov (wins in the butterfly and backstroke), Gabriella Tenret, Chloe Cotsifas, Gabrielle Malte, Madison Rambo-Smith, Grace Carrell and Emily Davis.

Li won the 25-yard freestyle (15.38), backstroke (17.82) and 100-yard IM (1:37.37) for the 7-8 boys and teamed with Bryce Mincy, Aidian Zambrano and Mario Stump to win the 100-yard freestyle relay (1:13.59). Pierce Tenret took first in the 50-yard freestyle (33.21), butterfly (37.15) and 100-yard IM (1:29.38) for the 9-10 boys. Teammate Joey Patocchi won the 50-yard backstroke (46.58) and breaststroke (56.87), and Andrew Maichel won the 50-yard freestyle (26.56) and 100-yard IM (1:09.84) for the 13-14 boys.

Other standouts for Benicia’s boys included Jake Rafac, Camron Jacobson, Jacob Hoenig and Joshua Becker.

The Stingrays compete again Aug. 1 in the Twin Counties Swim League championship meet at American Canyon High School.
