Gallerie Renee Marie has issued a Call for Entry for its first juried show, “The Art of the Book,” which opens May 11 and runs until June 9.  Altered book and mixed media artist LorriMarie Jenkins will be the juror for the exhibit which is open to all artists.  All work must be accurately represented in submitted jpeg images.  Entries must be made through CaFE, an online art submission website, callforentry.org.  Deadline for entry is April 22.

Artists may enter altered books or book art objects.  Altered books use all or part of a book as the starting point for a new work of art. Final pieces can take many different forms including sculpture, collage, assemblage or jewelry as long as the book features heavily in its final appearance. Artists looking for examples of book art might check out past exhibitions at the Seager Gray Gallery in Mill Valley.

Book art objects are books that have been created out of either traditional fine art bookbinding techniques or unique materials and techniques. Artists creating book art objects have turned to materials such as antique Japanese scrolls, fabric, driftwood, film negatives, and resin for their books.

Artists may submit a maximum of two entries.  There is a $25 entry fee.  Cash awards will be given for the top three winning entries: $100 for first place, $50 for second, and $25 for third.  There will be a non-cash honorable mention for 4th place.  In addition, all art work will be displayed in the gallery and available for sale.

Artists will be notified of acceptance by April 26.  Art must be delivered by May 3.  There will be a Juror’s Talk and Awards Ceremony on Saturday, May 19, from 4 to 5 p.m., followed that evening by an Opening Reception from 5 to 7 p.m.  The show will end on June 9 with a closing reception from 5 to 7 p.m.

As the juror of the show, LorriMarie Jenkins brings a long-time love for books.  She is known for using every part of the book to create her altered books and journals.  She teaches altered book and mixed media classes throughout the Bay Area, has been published in several art and design magazines, and shares two tutorials a week on her popular YouTube channel.  She lives in Vallejo with her artist husband and their Chihuahua puppy.

Gallerie Renee Marie is a contemporary art co-operative in downtown Benicia. It is located at 1038 First St. and is open Monday through Friday, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., Saturday and Sunday, noon to 5 p.m.  For more information call 707-480-5501, email galleriereneemarie@gmail.com or visit www.galleriereneemarie.com.
