75 years ago

School Opening Is Postponed To Sept. 27 (September 2, 1943)

Benicia schools will open Monday, September 27, instead of September 13 as originally planned.
The change was made presumably due to the final state clearance for the school in The Highlands before it was occupied as a school building.

50 years ago

Rabies clinic to be held August 30 (Aug. 29, 1968)

A rabies vaccination clinic for dogs will be held Friday evening, August 30 from 7:30 until 9:00 p.m. at the City Hall.
The State department of Public Health has declared Solano County to be a rabies areas and the law requires that all dogs over the age of four months be vaccinated.
Solano County Ordinance No. 434 requires that all dogs in the county be licensed each year. A current certificate of rabies vaccination, dated after January 1, 1967, must be presented when making application for a license.
Licenses will be sold at the clinic Friday or may be purchased week-days at the City Hall.
Deadline for the purchase of the 1968-69 dog license at the regular fee of $3.00 is September 3, after which a delinquent penalty will be added, doubling the cost to $6.00.
This will be the final clinic to be held in the county this year.

25 years ago

Outage puts thousands in the dark (Aug. 29, 1993)

More than 2,000 residents of Benicia and east Vallejo went without power for two hours Friday afternoon after work crews for Pacific Gas & Electric Co. struck one of the company’s underground lines at a substation in Benicia, Mary Buonocore, a company spokeswoman, said.
The accident occurred at 1:15 p.m. Power was restored at 3:30 p.m. for all but 35 customers. Buonocore said.
In all, 2,611 houses and businesses were affected by the outage, Bunocore said. But she was unsure what specific streets were affected. .
