The Benicia Fire Department and Solano County’s hazardous materials team were deployed to Viewmont Street yesterday afternoon following reports that a hazardous material had spilled in a household garage. The house’s residents were evacuated and a shelter in place was established for neighbors.

Benicia Fire Chief Jim Lydon said the incident occurred at a single-family residency on the 500 block of Viewmont Street, which is located east of East 5th Street. A container carrying an unidentified liquid had spilled and possibly combined with another substance to form a vapor cloud, Lydon said. Firefighters came by to safely remove the affected residents from their house. Some ambulances were also deployed to the scene.

Occupants of neighboring houses on Viewmont Street were asked not to leave their homes, and residents were asked to avoid the area until further notice.

At press time, Lydon said that Solano County’s hazmat team would be investigating the situation and planning to enter the garage, determine which products were responsible, make an effort to remove the hazards and clean up the spill.

No injuries were reported.
