A fire that started Monday afternoon in a garage on the 500 block of Cooper Drive spread to the home and caused minor damage, Benicia Fire Division Chief K.C. Smith said.

No one was hurt, he said.

Smith said his department was notified about the fire about 3:35 p.m. Monday, and firefighters arrived within three minutes.

Vallejo and Fairfield fire departments and Medic Ambulance Company also sent equipment to Benicia, he said, and Benicia police also reported to the scene.

“The initial report was that of a fire in the garage that also contained a parked car,” Smith said.

“The home was occupied at the time of the fire, and the occupant was alerted to the fire problem when he noticed smoke coming from around the door that separated the living space from the garage area.”

Smith said firefighters were able to contain the fire in the garage and limit damage it did to the home.

He said a damage estimate still is being made, and the cause of the fire is being investigated.
